Stitching the “Common Thread” with Danielle Susi and Kassie Scribner – SLUG Magazine

Image
Artists Kassie Scribner and Danielle Susi both have memories of their childhood going hand-in-hand with embroidery. They learned early that embroidery is not just a craft, but a form of art. Scribner ’s grandmother taught her the basics of embroidery at a young age. However, she didn’t start using these skills until about four years ago. From the first time she picked up her needle and stitched her lettering, she was hooked. Similarly, Susi’s mother was the one who taught her crocheting, knitting and sewing. Susi went to grad school at the  School of the Art Institute of Chicago and says that, “It’s where I learned advanced techniques and really fell in love with the possibilities of the art form.” These two creative minds were craving something that would bring the local embroidery community together and to share their skills through their needles—together, they created the Common Thread Retreat .  The Common Thread Retreat is an all-day embroidery retreat and will take pla...

Insider Picks writes about products and services to help you navigate when shopping online. Insider Inc. receives a commission from our affiliate partners when you buy through our links, but our reporting and recommendations are always independent and objective. Yes, you can knit with just yarn and needles, but your efforts and the finished product will be so much more successful with just a few additional accessories. Simply add these four tools to your Yarn Boss Yarn Bag and you’ll find even more pleasure in knitting. I was nine-years-old when I first attempted to learn to knit at a 4-H club meeting. The instructor told us to bring needles and yarn to the next gathering. My daddy, who knew nothing about knitting, picked up some needles and royal blue yarn for me. When I got to the meeting, I learned that the needles were the wrong gauge, which wouldn’t work well with the bulky yarn. The club leader laughed at my attempts at knitt...

Meet the 7 Designers Making the Coolest Jeans to Wear Back to School This Fall – TeenVogue.com

Image
“In 2013, that was pretty much everywhere except for secondhand and vintage shops,” she tells Teen Vogue . “I also became extremely sensitive to how clothing felt on my body…I wanted to find pieces that felt comfortable and that would allow me to grow in, instead of confine me.” This is how oversized vintage denim pants became a staple in her wardrobe and a canvas for her creations, as Wiznia began collaging on denim, using vintage patches, appliqués, and textile remnants. “While in treatment for an eating disorder, it is common that patients will take up knitting or crochet for anxiety management. However, I took up embroidery,” she explains. With this, Wiznia began incorporating needlework into her jeans as a way of “painting with thread.” “For the first time I started to customize pieces to fit my vision and my body rather than changing my body to fit the clothing,” she shares. Now, with her brand, Wiznia creates customized denim that is meant for all genders and bodies. Each it...
